28 Mar Rock Climber Magnus Midtbo: The Strongest Man in Norway
I recently partenered up with legendary photographer Chris Noble and Norweigian rock climbing star Magnus Midtbo. Our subject, Magnus, was flown to Salt Lake City from Washington DC by the Norweigian sport magazine Fri Flyt. He is currently ranked 5th in the world in sport climbing and is one of the few people on the planet to have climbed at the grade of 9b (an absurdly difficult grade… trust me…). A wad of taut muscle, he unflinchingly performed one arm pullups for us again and again as we coached him in body position and facial expressions. Not only a sportsman, he was a true sport during the shoot as well. Check out his blog to get a peek at his many climbing exploits.
Although this shoot was my first time with another photographer, I found the experience to be quite enjoyable. It was great having another set of eyes and hands in studio to brainstorm and troubleshoot. I can’t say it will become a habit, but I’m certainly glad that this time was with Chris. I’ve been friends with Chris for many years now (strangely, we both shot for Japan Tobacco Inc. in the past). Photography can be a lonely profession. It was nice sitting in front of the computer with another person for once! We both took something valuable away from the experience. Be sure to check out his website to see some of his incredible work!
